New technology will be introduced in Coop stores in Jersey to prevent people buying age-restricted products.

The Channel Islands Coop said from Monday 10 stores in the island would have facial age estimation technology.

A spokesperson said the pilot was the first of its kind in Jersey.

They said it was "about more than compliance", it was about "protecting young people, supporting our colleagues, and showing leadership in ethical and sustainable retailing".

The Channel Islands Coop said: "By trialling this technology, we're supporting [staff] and ensuring that age-restricted products are only sold to those legally entitled to buy them."

It said no personal details or ID documents were needed and customers could use a QR code or in-store device for a quick scan.

It added the software gave a yes or no answer based on the age threshold, and images were instantly deleted, and no identifying information was stored.
