People are being warned to stay away from cliffs in County Durham following a large landslip.

The landslip near Easington Colliery has been described as "quite dramatic" by the National Trust.

Periods of prolonged wet weather have been blamed for making some stretches more prone than usual to rock falls and collapsing cliffs.

The National Trust has put up temporary barriers and warning signs, and says it will put signs on the public footpath once the area has "stopped moving".

More landslips are likely with heavy rain forecast again over the weekend, the National Trust said.

A National Trust spokesperson said: "The coast is a constantly changing environment and coastal erosion is an ongoing natural process.

"We’d strongly advise everyone to respect these safety barriers and to stick to the main paths.”
