A project to improve a town centre is progressing after Nottingham City Council was allocated about £20 million in government funding.

The Bulwell Town Regeneration Project will include improvements to the town's market place, bus station public toilets and new play elements at Bulwell Bogs.

A promenade linking the marketplace and bogs area is also among the planned improvements.

The city council said detailed designs for the scheme would be developed over the next few months, with work expected to begin next summer and finish by March 2026.

More trees and greenery are part of the improvements, as well as the restoration of heritage features on historical buildings and shopfronts in Bulwell.

Funding for the project was announced back in November and formally accepted in spring.

The city council's major projects team will be at Bulwell Riverside on 23 and 26 July from 10:00 BST to 16:00 to remind people about the plans and get feedback to feed into the design process.

Residents gave their input to the scheme through a public consultation in 2022.

The council said it would also work with the Environment Agency to see how the River Leen area can be improved and become more resilient to future flooding events.

Neghat Khan, leader of the city council, said: “Bulwell town centre is an important part of the city and I’m pleased we can invest vital funds to make improvements, such as creating a modern square with better toilets and more green spaces.

"This is really an exciting time for this historic market town.”
