Teenage boy dies in Windermere tragedy

A 16-year-old boy died after getting "into difficulty" in England's largest lake.

Police began a search for the boy near Brockhole, on Windermere in the Lake District, shortly after 17:00 BST on 24 July. His body was found at about 23:45 BST.

The boy has not been named, but police said officers were supporting his family.

The Health and Safety Executive, which looks into the possible culpability of businesses in deaths and injuries, confirmed it was investigating alongside Cumbria Police.

The Lake District National Park Authority confirmed the boy had been at Brockhole on Windermere's visitor centre before entering the lake and "tragically" losing his life.

A spokesman said: "We are shocked and saddened by this news and our thoughts are with his family and friends."

Staff from Furness, Arnside and Maryport coastguards joined other groups of rescuers in the search for the teenager.

In a social media post, Furness Coastguard, external said: "Unfortunately a teenage boy was recovered from the water... and our thoughts are with the family and friends."
