A losing Labour MP candidate has been put forward for deputy police and fire commissioner hours after the general election.

Marianne Kimani stood for the party in the Daventry constituency, where she came second to the Conservatives.

Labour's Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner in Northamptonshire, Danielle Stone, has now announced her the preferred candidate for her deputy.

She said Ms Kimani will be "vital in delivering better engagement and making a difference to people's lives".

Ms Stone took up the role of commissioner after an election in May, gaining the role from the Conservatives.

The Tories won the Daventry MP seat in the general election with majority of just over 3,000.

But Ms Kimani, who has served in Northamptonshire Police as a special constable, increased Labour's vote by 10%.

She said: "I have focussed on serving the community in my life and career."

Ms Kimani added she wanted to "help shape policies that protect people and enhance policing and fire services".

The appointment will be discussed at a confirmation hearing of Northamptonshire Police, Fire and Crime Panel on 12 July.
