More than 80 firefighters tackle garage fire

More than 80 firefighters are dealing with a blaze at a commercial garage in a city.

The crews from Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue were called to the building in Bitterne Road West, Southampton, at about 05:00 BST.

Eleven fire engines, two aerial ladder platforms and specialist vehicles were being used and the road has been closed between the junctions of Rampart Road and Bullar Road.

The fire service has asked residents in the area to keep windows and doors closed due to the amount of smoke.

A resident from the nearby Steuart road said he "was woken by explosions at 05:00 this morning".

He said he went outside to investigate the noise and "the sky was filled with black smoke and there were flames".
