A Carpathian lynx at Newquay Zoo has given birth to two kittens.

The kittens were born at the end of May but have only just emerged from their nest box.

The species is part of a conservation breeding programme at the zoo in Cornwall which aims to boost the number of Carpathian lynx looked after by conservation-focused zoos across Europe, with the potential of releasing animals into the wild in the future.

John Meek, curator of plants and animals at Newquay Zoo, said the kittens' mother, Kicsi, was "taking excellent care" of them.

He said: "We can’t wait for our visitors to meet them as they are truly adorable bundles of fluff at the moment.”

Carpathian lynx are a sub-species of Eurasian lynx found in the Carpathian mountain regions of Europe.

The Wild Planet Trust, which owns and operates the zoo, said the species faced several threats in the wild, including habitat loss and poaching.
