Man arrested after pedestrian killed in Brighton

A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a 26-year-old man was killed when he was hit by a white van as he was walking.

It happened at 05:00 GMT on Saturday at the junction of Preston Road and Cumberland Road in Brighton, East Sussex.

The van drove away from the scene but was stopped on the A27 in Worthing, West Sussex later.

A 40-year-old man from Brighton has been arrested.

Det Ch Insp Emma Vickers said “We are in the early stages of this fast-moving investigation.

“There will be a significant police presence in the area as we seek to establish the circumstances around this tragic incident, and I would urge anyone with information to come forward."

The victim, who is said to be local, was declared dead at the scene.

Police have closed the road between Preston Drove and Knoyle Road.
