Recording studio plans given approval

A row of historic-looking buildings along a street. In front of one of the buildings, people sit at outdoor tables. The four-storey buildings are in different styles. Coronation Buildings, in the centre, is made of large, light brown stone with mainly sash windows. On the ground floor there is a large wooden central doorway beneath an arch, with arched windows immediately either side and then rectangular ones at each end. There is ornate masonry and decorative pillars on the two upper floors which each contain five windows. Above that, within the roof space, is a large, three-sectioned window beneath a triangular design in the middle, and smaller single windows under an arched dormer at each end.Image source, Newcastle City Council

The Coronation Building in Newcastle are being converted into studios

  • Published

Plans to convert an Edwardian building into a £1.8m recording studio have been approved.

Newcastle City Council said the conversion of the Grade II listed Coronation Buildings on Quayside was under way and would also see the creation of podcasting studios and editing suites.

The plans were announced in a joint statement by record label Warner Music UK and music development agency Generator last year.

It will be paid for by the North East Combined Authority (NECA) using money from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, with support from Newcastle City Council. A completion date of April 2026 has been suggested.
