Swimmers push for return of all-year opening at lido

More than 1,300 people have signed a petition to bring back year-round swimming at a Surrey lido.
Guildford Lido was open 12 months a year from 2014, but that ended during the pandemic. This year's summer season ended on Sunday.
Campaigners are asking Guildford Borough Council and the operators Freedom Leisure to put all-year round swimming in the contract when it is renewed in November.
The council and operator have been contacted for comment.
Ali Pereira, who set up the petition, told BBC Radio Surrey: "It's a beautiful facility, the water is super clean, they've invested in it recently.
"We'd like to see it open all year round."
Dr Thom Van Every has used the lido, off Stoke Road, most mornings during the summer.
He said outdoor winter swimming can provide specific health benefits.
"There's a growing body of scientific evidence that points to the benefits," he said, "whether that's improvement in your metabolism, fewer upper respiratory tract infections and your mental health.
"Many swimmers report just feeling much better and happier after a swim, particularly in the colder water."
Ms Pereira said her petition got 1,000 signatures within 72 hours.
She added: "It shows the strength of feeling.
"We'd like to support (the council and operator), help with the pricing and the business plan. We're not just demanding, we'd like to help.
"When they started winter swimming in 2014 they ran a successful programme until Covid, so we know it works."
