Multiple reports of spiking incidents in Plymouth's bars and clubs are being investigated, police have said.

Although the incidents remain unconfirmed, officers urged the public to stay vigilant and safeguard themselves and others while enjoying the nightlife.

Ch Insp James Drake, from Devon and Cornwall Police, said: "We are fully investigating all reports and working closely with bar staff and security to ensure everyone's safety."

The force said it had increased its presence in the city centre and had stationed a Safe Bus at Derrys Cross Roundabout, staffed by paramedics and security personnel, to offer support.

'Remain vigilant'

It said it was "aware of a number of reports from people stating they may have been the victim of spiking incidents in Plymouth in recent days".

People were encouraged to report any suspicious activity to the police via 101, or call 999 in emergencies.

Mr Drake said: "I would ask the public to remain vigilant to risks and help protect others around them.

"Please report any suspicious incidents to the police or any security or staff working in any establishment."
