Drivers spotted U-turning to avoid a major delay on a road in north Wales can expect fines, police have said.

A fire near the Penmaenbach headland tunnel in Conwy county shut the A55 in both directions on on Friday morning, causing long tailbacks until the road reopened at about 13:00 GMT.

North Wales Police said further delays were caused by motorists turning their vehicles around and driving against the flow of traffic.

The force said those claiming to have been "following others" do not a valid excuse.

"A number of drivers were spoken to and told to expect a letter through the post, likely to be a fine and points," police said in a statement.

"Nobody likes to be stuck on the carriageway and we know it's incredibly frustrating and people have places to be - but all we ask is for a little bit of patience and understanding.

"Huge thanks to all those who were patient."
