Fire crews remain at the scene of a large blaze in an industrial building in Horsham.
Emergency services were called to the scene in Queen Street at about 22:51 GMT on Saturday.
Nearby residents have been advised by West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service to keep their windows closed due to large amounts of smoke.
"Avoid the area to allow firefighters to work safely," a spokesperson said.
Flames and large plumes of smoke could be seen coming from an ironmongery, timber and decorating shop in the area.
The cause of the fire is not yet known.
Sussex Police said the road had been closed and a number of surrounding buildings had been evacuated to ensure the safety of the public.
"Occupants of nearby buildings are asked to keep their windows closed, and we urge the public to please avoid the area to allow the emergency services to work safely," a police spokesperson said.
