Racist graffiti has been scrawled on memorial benches at a scenic spot in East Yorkshire.

Humberside Police is investigating the damage, which is alleged to have happened at Hessle Foreshore on Cliff Road, Hessle, between 1 and 8 March.

The brown benches have bronze plaques on them filled with tributes to people's lost loved ones.

A spokesperson for East Riding of Yorkshire Council said the benches had been removed for cleaning.

They said: "The graffiti was reported to us by a member of the public and the benches were removed from the foreshore yesterday morning.

"The benches will have the graffiti removed and be given any other maintenance that is needed before they are reinstalled at Hessle Foreshore.

"The matter has been reported to the police as criminal damage including racist graffiti."

A police spokesperson asked anyone with information to contact the force.
