A man who suffocated a woman with a pillow on a cruise ship has been jailed.

David Morris, 57, from Wolverhampton, assaulted the victim while on a cruise in April, Staffordshire Police said.

Morris had initially denied the non-fatal offence in police custody, but later pleaded guilty to intentional suffocation at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court.

He was sentenced to three years and 10 months in prison at the same court on Wednesday.

PC Liam Avery said: "We worked tirelessly to gather evidence of Morris' offending and I am glad he eventually admitted the offence in court.

"I would like to commend the bravery of the victim in coming forward and helping us with our investigation."
