A swimming pool will close for repairs after a leak was discovered.

Shropshire Council said investigations at Market Drayton Swimming and Fitness Centre would start next Wednesday, to "fully identify the cause".

It said the pool would then remain closed until further notice for the leak to be fixed.

The authority said the source of the leak appeared to be from underground pipework close to the main pool.

It said the cost of repairs was likely to be about £230,000.

James Owen, the councillor responsible for leisure services, said: "Closing the pools is obviously something we don't want to do, but the main pool is losing a significant amount of water and this can't continue."

He added as it was an older pool, "there may be more to it than repairing the pipework", but the council was hoping that was not the case.

He reassured people the closure would be a temporary one.

The authority said it would be talking to schools and other groups which use the pool to find alternatives.

It suggested people either travel to Shrewsbury or use the new pool in Whitchurch.
