Police say unauthorised car meets pose a risk to all road users

A vehicle has been seized by police and several drivers have been fined following "dangerous" street racing in Barnsley and Rotherham.

South Yorkshire Police said it received reports on Saturday just before 21:00 BST of cars congregating and racing on Fairacre Way in North Anston.

Officers seized one car, issued warnings to four people and gave traffic offence reports to seven others, meaning they will receive penalty points or a fine.

The group congregated again 15 minutes later on the Dearne Valley Parkway, the force said, with two drivers caught speeding and two further traffic offence reports issued.

Roads policing inspector Matt Collings said: "Dangerous and anti-social driving that poses a risk to road users and blights our communities will not be tolerated.

"We will respond and carry out a range of tactics to ensure those involved face points, fines or losing their vehicle."

Insp Collings added: "We understand that groups in our communities have a passion for vehicles and showcasing them, and we continue to express our invitation for organisers of car meets to work alongside us."
