Around 50 people were led to safety by firefighters after a fire broke out in a residential block of flats in Barking, east London in the early hours of Thursday.

London Fire Brigade were called at 00:46 BST to a sixth floor property in the block on Mizzen Street and brought the fire under control within an hour.

Eight fire engines and around 60 firefighters were involved in tackling the fire in the flat which crews said was left "mostly destroyed".

Two people were taken to hospital after being evacuated from the building and an investigation into the cause of the fire is under way.
