There will be extra patrols at a popular beach in north Wales this weekend to prevent illegal camping, fires and barbecues.

National Resources Wales (NRW) said it was working with North Wales Police to patrol Newborough National Nature Reserve and Forest on Anglesey, also known as Llanddwyn beach, which was used to film TV series House of the Dragon.

Traffic will be controlled at Newborough and the car park will close once full - expected to be before 10:00 BST.

NRW asked that visitors consider visiting one of Anglesey's "many other beaches and destinations".

It comes as residents near the beach said their lives were in "lockdown" due to traffic problems and threatened to protest earlier this year.

The car park will not reopen until later in the afternoon, NRW said, even as spaces become available.

"This is to ease traffic flow and prevent cars parking in Newborough village waiting for spaces to become available," it said.

Dylan Williams, NRW's operations manager for north west Wales, said a high number of visitors were expected over bank holiday weekend.

"Following the exceptionally dry weather it only takes one stray spark to cause a fire that could devastate wildlife and communities and put our emergency services under extra pressure," he said.

"We also want to remind visitors that overnight stays are not allowed.

"The site is home to some of Wales' most precious habitats and supports a range of rare wildlife. We must maintain a balance between the wishes of individuals to enjoy the outdoors and our responsibilities to protect nature and to respect local communities.

"The vast majority of people visiting behave responsibly and we would like to thank them for doing their bit. We hope that will continue as we head into the bank holiday weekend."
