A motorcyclist who died in a collision with a car was an "exceptional athlete" who competed nationally in martial arts competitions, his family has said.

Jet Thomas-Day, from Weymouth, Dorset, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash in Warmwell Road, Crossways, on Saturday.

His family said: "As an incredible 22-year-old black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) and a brown belt in Judo, Jet is well known throughout the country."

Police have appealed for witnesses and footage of Mr Thomas-Day's red Benelli motorcycle and a white Vauxhall Corsa, which collided at about 11:10 BST.

Mr Thomas-Day coached at Weymouth BJJ. In a statement his family said they were "absolutely broken" by his death .

They said: "He was an exceptional and dedicated athlete, excelling at any sport he chose during his short life: water polo, rugby, sailing, climbing, Muay Thai and snowboarding.

"In stark contrast he also loved reading, anime, photography, chess and crocheting. His passion for learning new skills knew no bounds.

"He had managed to perfectly balance a wisdom that was way beyond his years, with a childlike sense of fun, and all the while completely oblivious of the impact he made on those around him.

"He was a giant of a man with the absolute gentlest soul."

An online donations page has so far raised more than £5,000 to create a physical memorial for him.
