Two people have been rescued after their car was cut off by the tide as they tried to cross a causeway.

RNLI volunteers and the coastguard were alerted to reports of adults stranded on the roof of a submerged vehicle at Holy Island, Northumberland, at 17:40 BST on Wednesday.

The pair had waded to a refuge hut at the midpoint of the causeway when rescuers arrived.

Seahouses RNLI was able to transport them to safety, "cold but unhurt".

A mile off the mainland in the North Sea, the island is cut off twice a day by incoming tides.

Crew member Chris Leicester said it had been "an incredibly dangerous situation" and "a stark reminder" that all visitors to Holy Island must check safe crossing times before travelling.

Last week, a family was rescued when their car was trapped.

Three children had climbed on the roof of the vehicle, while two adults were perched on door frames as water began to come over the bonnet.
