A man has been arrested after a pedestrian was seriously injured in a hit-and-run crash.

The pedestrian, a man in his 20s, is being treated in hospital after a red Vauxhall Corsa drove off the road and hit him, before driving away.

The collision happened on Marygate, in Berwick, at about 00.30 GMT.

A spokesman for Northumbria Police said a 24-year-old was now in custody after being arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

Police are urging anyone who was travelling in the area at the time to contact them if they have any information or dashcam footage.
