Former colleagues of a "dedicated" and thoughtful" Manx politician have paid tribute to him following his death.

Geoff Corkish was elected to the House of Keys in 2006 and served as member for Douglas West, later joining the Legislative Council in 2013 for five years.

Members of the house stood in silence to remember him at its first meeting since his death last month at 72.

Speaker Juan Watterson said Mr Corkish had been "someone who carried kindness, humour and natural warmth" and brought people together.

"[He was] even-tempered, considerate, not one for the theatrics in the chamber, but for careful listening and for steady, thoughtful contribution," he said.

'Deeply respected'

Watterson said prior to entering politics, Mr Corkish had been "a familiar and trusted voice" as communications director for the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company.

"He had a warmth, a humour and a presence that made him more than just a figure in management. He was someone people felt they could approach."

However, Watterson said people would remember Mr Corkish most fondly for his contribution to the arts, culture and music on the island.

He said: "Everywhere he saw opportunity to celebrate local talent, to uplift Manx music, honour tradition and make culture accessible."

Mr Corkish also served as chairman of the Isle of Man Arts Council and was a well-known compere of community and fundraising events, founding member of the island's Festival of Choirs, and Cleaveland Medal winner.

"He loved to perform and was not afraid to don a tutu for a good cause," said Watterson, adding tributes to Mr Corkish reflected his reach and "how deeply he was respected".
