Flash flooding after 'biblical' rainfall

Heavy rainfall described as "biblical" by residents caused flash flooding in parts of Shropshire and halted events elsewhere in the Midlands.
The Met Office issued a yellow weather warning, external for parts of England and Wales on Saturday night and into Sunday evening, stressing that heavy, possibly thundery rain could cause flooding and disruption.
Former Environment Agency area manager Dave Throup said on X , externalthat half of September’s total average rainfall had fallen in two hours on Sunday morning.
Flash flooding had been "inevitable" after some "serious rain in the Shrewsbury area," he added.
Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service, external was called to Belmont Mansions, Shrewsbury on Sunday afternoon after reports the roof was leaking, affecting the building's electrics.
Crews helped isolate the supply and used a 13.5m ladder to access the roof of the former church to clear the drainage as a temporary solution.
Meanwhile, in Hereford, there were no balloons flying on day two of the Herefordshire and South Wales Balloon Festival.
Organisers said the decision had been made due to the heavy rain forecast for Sunday, and monster truck rides at the event had also been cancelled due to the downpour.
