Tributes have been paid to a boy from Cardiff after he died suddenly at the weekend.

In a letter to parents, Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Bro Edern said Marc Aguilar, a Year 8 pupil, was popular and "shone in the world of sports".

It said the school's thoughts were with the family at this difficult time.

A team of counsellors has been made available to support pupils and staff.

Head teacher Iwan Pritchard and another member of staff has been to see the family, who were grateful for all the messages they had received, the letter added.

The school asked the "Bro Edern school family" to be mindful of the family's need to grieve in private.

Staff also posted a message on X, formerly Twitter, paying tribute to the pupil.

South Wales Police said it was investigating the "sudden and unexplained" death of a 12-year-old boy in St Mellons, Cardiff.

A spokesman said: "Emergency services were called to the boy’s home address just after 4pm on Saturday, September 14.

"There are no suspicious circumstances, and an investigation is ongoing. Our thoughts are with his family and friends."
