A man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving after a cyclist was killed in a crash in south-east London, the Met Police has said.

Officers were called to Old Kent Road at about 06:55 GMT on Friday after a car collided with the cyclist near the junction with Dunton Road.

The 34-year-old male cyclist, who was treated by paramedics from the London Ambulance Service, died at the scene.

A 68-year-old man, who was driving the car, failed to stop at the scene but was traced a short while later and arrested, the Met said. He has been released on bail, pending further enquiries.

The cyclist's next of kin have been informed of his death and are being supported by specially trained officers.

Det Sgt Rob Groombridge, from the Met's Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said officers were working to establish what had happened.

"I'm appealing for anyone who saw the collision, or who may have captured footage of it on their dashcam, to please contact us as soon as possible," he added.
