Police sealed off part of a city street after workers dug up what were suspected to be human bones close to a church.
They were digging up part of a pavement near St Andrew's Church and close to Bridewell Alley in Norwich when they made the discovery just before 21:00 GMT on Monday.
A cordon was put in place while crime scene investigators attended the site, Norfolk Police said.
The force said the bones were thought to be human and would be examined to find out when they date back to.
The tests could take several weeks, a Norfolk Police spokesperson said.
