An islander has lost £100,000 after falling victim to a telephone scam call, the police have said.

The States of Jersey Police said it wanted to "remind islanders once again" to be careful when answering calls from anyone pretending to be with their bank.

Over the past year, data shows £7.3m has been lost to fraud and cyber crime by people and organisations in the Channel Islands.

The force said one islander on Wednesday had provided their account access details to what they believed was a genuine fraud department at their bank - losing £100,000 in the process.

"The simplest way to avoid being caught out by these unexpected calls is to hang up and contact your bank on their official phone number," it said.

In March, HSBC issued a warning to its customers in the Channel Islands and Isle of Man following a spate of scams, saying fraudsters were pretending to be members of its staff to try and trick people out of money.
