Residents disturbed by a mysterious smell in Derby are being asked to report it.

An unsettling smell arrived in Spondon with the recent warm weather from 21 June, leading to a number of complaints.

Derby City Council's environmental protection team is building up a picture of the problem and needs people to report when and where they smell the odour.

The authority has provided diaries for people who have made contact in order to log the smell.

A spokesperson for Derby City Council said: "We've been contacted by a small number of residents reporting an unpleasant odour in the Spondon area.

"Our officers are investigating but, so far, it's not clear what's causing the smell.

"We are speaking to local businesses and checking weather data for the area, but further information would be helpful.

"We've provided diaries to those who've already contacted us, to help track when and where the smell occurs.

"We would ask any other residents that notice it to contact Environmental Services providing dates, times and locations."

City councillors for the area, Chris Poulter, Nicola Roulstone and Jonathan Smale, have also urged residents to report any instances of the smell.

In a statement, they said: "There has been a few leads but nothing concrete has come forward and we have put forward all the intel we have received from residents."
