Plans to upgrade the car park of a major visitor attraction have been given the go ahead.

South Tyneside Council approved an application for the Souter Lighthouse complex between South Shields and Whitburn.

The National Trust, which manages the site, wants to improve the facility near the lighthouse which was first constructed more than 30 years ago.

About 70,000 people use it every year, both to visit the lighthouse or Whitburn Coastal Park and The Leas, a two mile coastal walk.

The resurfaced car park will have the same number of spaces, but will include two disabled bays, two bus bays and a cycle parking bay with cycle storage, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

The National Trust has three years to carry out the work.
