A new bus station and multi-storey car park are expected to open by the end of May, a council says.

The Crewe Royal Arcade scheme in Cheshire was previously scheduled to open in late 2023.

Cheshire East Council signed a development agreement for the site with Peveril Securities in October 2020 and work started on site in April 2022.

In November, the council announced the second phase of the development would be scaled back.

Council bosses cited the scrapping of HS2 and rising costs as reasons for shelving the scheme.

Under alternative proposals, a planned leisure development could be replaced by a temporary park.

A spokesperson for the authority said: "The opening of the new bus station and multi-storey car park is expected to take place by the end of May 2024.

"Further information about this will be issued over the coming weeks."
