A man has suffered serious injuries after he was assaulted in Torquay, police have said.

Devon and Cornwall Police said officers were called to Union Street after a man was attacked shortly after 02:30 BST.

A man in his 40s was taken to hospital with serious head and facial injuries, police said.

Officers said a man in his 30s, from Torquay, was arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

The force said he was also arrested on suspicion of assaulting an emergency service worker, resisting police and damaging police property.

Police appealed for witnesses or anyone with information to come forward.
