The devolution agreement was poised to clear its final hurdle in the coming weeks

The leaders of Lancashire County Council, Blackburn with Darwen and Blackpool Council have jointly said they "remain committed" to securing a devolution deal for the county.

The agreement had been poised to clear its final hurdle in the coming weeks, with legislation to bring it into force set to be put before Parliament, before the general election was called last week.

In a joint statement, the three authorities said there would be a delay in finalising the deal due to the election, to be held on 4 July.

However, they said they will continue to work together and "remain convinced this is a good deal".

'Great opportunity'

A joint statement by councillor Phillippa Williamson, leader of Lancashire County Council, councillor Phil Riley, of Blackburn with Darwen Council, and councillor Lynn Williams, of Blackpool Council, stated: “We remain committed to securing a devolution deal for Lancashire".

“We believe the transfer of powers from central government to Lancashire is in the best interests of residents and businesses," the statement continued.

"We strongly believe the voice of businesses in Lancashire is crucial in making sure our devolution deal focuses on the right issues.

“As Leaders we are committing to establishing a new board of Lancashire business leaders, representing the wider range of sectors and places across the county.

“One of their first tasks will be to help set Lancashire's economic strategy, ensuring investment in infrastructure, skills and business support is targeted in a way that supports our wider ambitions."

The trio of leaders said the timing of the general election had put back the devolution deal but reiterated their commitment "to conclude this with the new government”.

"We believe this remains a great opportunity for our county."
