Highways officials asked for safety improvements to the design of the access road to the site

A developer has been asked to improve the safety of the design of a road leading to a proposed housing development.

Abbey Properties Cambridgeshire wants to build 115 new homes on land off the A15 London Road in Yaxley.

Cambridgeshire County Council, the highways authority, said the current design of the access road to the development posed a risk of side impact traffic collisions.

Abbey Properties Cambridgeshire said the existing site access road would be improved.

The application's currently being considered by Huntingdonshire District Council.

A county council report, sent to the district council, said visibility around the proposed junction between the new access road and the 40mph London Road was not sufficient.

It also raised concerns about the proximity of the junction to four existing homes in Tudor Place.

The highways officer added that developments of more than 100 homes normally need a second access road, and asked for emergency services to be consulted before any decision on the plans.

Safety worries

People living in the village have raised concerns about the development, which is planned on land currently used as stables, including safety worries about the proposed access road.

Abbey Properties Cambridgeshire said the existing site access road would be "improved to provide a formal access junction for the development in keeping with standards for residential developments outlined in manual for streets."

It said the new homes would "contribute meaningfully" to housing demand in the area and offer 40% affordable housing.
