Bedfordshire journalist Neil Roy dies aged 80

Tributes have been paid to a Bedfordshire journalist and rugby club stalwart who has died at the age of 80.
Neil Roy, who lived near Bedford, covered the region throughout his career, notably as editor of The Bedfordshire Times and later as a reporter and commentator for BBC Three Counties Radio.
He had a long association with Bedford Blues rugby club, external, which will fly the club's flag at half-mast this week as a mark of respect.
Geoff Irvine, who recently stepped down as president of the Bedford Blues, said: "Neil was the last of a dying breed, he was a proper old-fashioned journalist."
"I knew Neil for years and years and years ... [he was] never afraid to ask the awkward questions. He'll be sadly missed."
Mr Roy, who was also involved with Bedford hospital radio early in his career, was a hugely respected figure in the county, acting as a mentor to a generation of journalists.
Louisa Compton, head of news and current affairs at Channel 4, wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter, external: "Neil Roy was instrumental to my career & taught me so much - taking me under his wing when I knew nothing about journalism & had no qualifications. He helped me get my first job at BBC Three Counties Radio and always kept in touch 20+ yrs later. I know I am one of many he helped."
'A true Bedfordian'
Mr Roy, who was married to Sheila, was a long-standing supporter of Bedford Blues, rarely missing a game in 40 years.
He was praised for helping save the club in the 1990s and for his work compiling club records and history books.
"He played an enormous part in the saving of the club... he played a major part in getting the right publicity for that. I certainly never forgot his involvement," said Mr Irvine.
In its tribute, Bedford Blues called Mr Roy "a true Bedfordian" and added: "The thoughts of everyone associated with Bedford Blues are with Neil’s family and friends at this time."
