City centre flats evacuated due to fire on roof

Eight fire engines were called to the scene in Plymouth city centre

A block of flats in Plymouth had to be evacuated after a fire broke out on the roof of the building, firefighters have said.

Crews were called to the blaze on Constantine Street in the city centre at about 18:10 BST, Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said.

It said eight fire engines were sent to the five-storey block of flats, with the blaze extinguished a short time later.

Police said residents were allowed back in at about 19:55.

The service said a fire was seen on the roof but crews were working to locate the source.

Acting Insp Rob Maddison from the police said the fire was dealt with quickly and no injuries were reported.

"A fire investigation is now ongoing now to ensure there was nothing that they need to check for the future," he said.
