The new Dean of Worcester has approved by King Charles III.

The Reverend Canon Dr Stephen Edwards was the interim dean following the retirement of the Very Reverend Peter Atkinson in September.

Dr Edwards, who joined Worcester Cathedral as a residentiary canon in September 2019, will be installed as the permanent dean on Sunday 15 September at Worcester Cathedral.

Reflecting on the announcement, he described it as a "privilege and joy".

In his new role he will be in charge of the chapter at Worcester Cathedral.

Speaking after the announcement was made public, he said: "I look forward to continuing to develop the cathedral’s ministry and position as a place of prayer, learning and welcome.

"Ever since arriving in Worcester five years ago I have loved this amazing cathedral and have grown in deep affection for the people and city as well as the wider diocese."

At the time the role was first advertised, the Bishop of Worcester, Dr John Inge, said he wanted the new dean to "encourage collegiality and care, honesty and respect".

He also said the new dean would need to show leadership but also be a team player.

Discussing Dr Edwards' appointment, he said he was "delighted" adding: "Stephen is an exceptionally gifted priest who is much loved in Worcester and beyond.

"He has been a brilliant interim dean, and we are very blessed that God has called him to be the next dean."
