People are being asked to give their views on an events space proposed for Carlisle city centre.

Market Square and Greenmarket are being redeveloped with a 6,000sq m (64,583sq ft) area earmarked for a "multifunctional events space".

Cumberland Council leader Councillor Mark Fryer said the space would combine the city's history with "contemporary design".

The war memorial is also set to move to a more prominent spot within Market Square.

Mr Fryer said: "The Market Square and Greenmarket project promises an energetic and inviting event space in the heart of the city.

“We invite residents and businesses to share their thoughts, ensuring that this space becomes an area that we can all be proud of."

An online consultation closes on 8 March

Proposed design elements include etchings on selected steps and the incorporation of the city's crest, decorated with roses and a central cross, to replace some of the drainage grating.

The local authority said two "unhealthy" trees had been removed from the designated area, with a further two taken down because they were in the construction zone.

The council added there would be new tree and shrub planting within the area.

An online survey will be open until midnight on Friday 8 March.
