Cash taken from criminals will be used to install a new CCTV system, it has been agreed.

Thames Valley Police is to contribute £15,000 towards the new system in Woodley, Berkshire, with £10,000 of that sum coming from money confiscated from thieves, according to Matthew Barber, the region's police and crime commissioner.

Labour councillors at Wokingham Borough Council proposed the authority matched the £15,000, meaning the project now has £30,000 of funding.

Liberal Democrat council leader Stephen Conway accepted the amendment to the council’s medium term financial plan, and said the money would "make a big difference".

Police and crime commissioner Mr Barber said: "£10,000 from the sale of stolen goods is being provided to Woodley Town Centre Partnership to support their CCTV project."

He said this was on top of £5,000 already promised by Thames Valley Police.

Mr Conway said the money would "make a big difference to the attempt to secure CCTV in Woodley town centre, which is clearly something that we would want to support".
