A section of the M42 near Birmingham Airport was closed in both directions on Wednesday night due to a police incident, the National Highways service said.

The service said on X, formerly Twitter, that the motorway was closed between junctions six and seven and there were delays in both directions.

The Central Motorway Police Group (CMPG) said it was also at the scene and it was working with Staffordshire Police and West Midlands Police to free trapped traffic and resolve the situation.

The CMPG added that some sections of the M6 that connected to the M42 were also closed and drivers should consider alternative routes, such as the A446, A45, A38, or M5.

However it warned that these routes were also likely to be congested.
