Police have seized a cannabis haul in the Scottish Borders with a potential street value of £2.3m.

Officers raided two former retail premises in Galashiels town centre on Tuesday morning following tip-offs.

Significant quantities of cannabis were recovered from both properties.

Five men - aged between 26 and 63 - were arrested and charged, and are due to appear in court later.

Police said inquiries are ongoing and have thanked the public for providing the intelligence that led to the raids on Channel Street.

Det Sgt Barry Roebuck said: “Taking drugs off the street is a priority for Police Scotland and information provided by the public is vital in helping us continue to do this."

Ch Insp Stuart Fletcher, the local area commander for the Scottish Borders, has thanked people in Galashiels "for their support and understanding" as officers continue to work in the town centre.

He said: “Drug misuse brings nothing but misery to our communities.

"I want to reassure people in the Scottish Borders that we will continue to use every tool and tactic at our disposal to target those involved in this criminal activity.”

Anyone with information or concerns about drug misuse can contact Police Scotland on 101 or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
