Shipping container plan 'necessary' to support farm
- Published
A farming business said plans to rent out shipping containers was "necessary" to support the firm.
David Slone has applied to Westmorland and Furness Council to place 14 shipping containers on land at Piel View, Walney.
Planning documents state the move is necessary for the farm due to the reduction of subsidies and increased costs of running the business.
"It has become necessary to generate income from other sources to subsidise the farming enterprise and secure the farm’s future," they added.
The farm is currently stocked with traditional breeds of both cattle and sheep, which graze South End nature reserve, reports the Local Democracy Reporting Service.
If the plans are approved, the shipping containers would be rented out to people for self storage.
The plans show each shipping container would be 14ft (4.3m) x 20ft (6m) in size and would be accessed via Mawflat Lane.
