Work is about to start on removing four mini-roundabouts from a busy road which are said to be dangerous.

A local councillor said the roundabouts in Kinmel Bay, Conwy, give a "false sense of security" to drivers.

The work will begin on Monday in St Asaph Avenue, and is expected to take two weeks.

The roundabouts will be replaced with junctions and "give way" road markings.

Kinmel Bay councillor Nigel Smith said he was glad the roundabouts would be replaced with junctions after being put there more than a decade ago.

“The roundabouts give a false sense of security to those vehicles exiting the side roads,” he said.

“Vehicles travelling north to south don’t necessarily give way, and as such they cause traffic problems for the residents who use that road regularly.”

The work will be done in the evening on the road, which Mr Smith said he believed the road carries up to 8,000 vehicles a day.

“We’ve got to make it as painless as possible so it hinders the least amount of people," he added.

Conwy council said contractors will work from 18:00 GMT to 02:00 GMT to minimise traffic disruption at the junctions with Chester Avenue, Owain Glyndwr, Clwyd Park, and Denbigh Circle.

It is hoped the work will be finished by Friday, 2 February.

The council said: “This section of St Asaph Avenue will be closed at these times.

“Our contractors will make every effort to carry out the noisier work earlier in the night.

“Please speak to the traffic management contractor on site to discuss if and when you can get vehicle access.

“There will be access for pedestrians at all times.”
