A councillor had complained that the long established adult store was not appropriate for the area

A sex shop has had its licence renewed following the first objection to it in more than two decades.

Cheshire East councillor Sarah Bennett-Wake had said she did not think the Nantwich Road, Crewe store was appropriate to the character of the area as it was on a high street and a walking route to school.

A Cheshire East meeting heard the licence for Temptations was renewed annually and there had never been an objection from anyone previously.

The shop owner Alan Brook said he had operated responsibly as the licence holder for the last 21 years.

The Labour councillor Ms Bennett-Wake, had also argued pornography contributed to violence against women.

Mr Brook said no violent DVDs were sold in the shop and all DVDs sold had the proper certificate from the British Board of Film Classification.

He said that there had been "no trouble whatsoever" in the 21 years he had traded from the address, and around 30% of his customers were women.

The licensing committee was told Cheshire Police had no objection to the licence being renewed.

The licence renewal was approved and the shop is permitted to open from 9am to 6pm, Monday to Saturday.
