School closures amid snow and icy conditions

Some schools have shut across Devon and Cornwall due to snow and ice.

Devon County Council said Princetown Community Primary School was shut, external due to low staff numbers as a result of the weather conditions.

Callywith College in Cornwall said "no lessons" would take place , externaland buses had been suspended due to "adverse weather conditions in the Bodmin area". Icy road conditions have been reported on the A30 in the Temple area, and heavy hail showers caused tricky conditions in Fraddon.

A Met Office yellow weather warning for snow and ice, external is in force across Cornwall and parts of Devon until 23:59 GMT.

Callywith College said students who had arrived on buses, would be returned home immediately.

Snow has been reported in Bodmin, Camelford, Tavistock, Princetown, Okehampton and Plympton.

Ian Cobham, who runs Dartmoor Brewery at Princetown, said snow in the area was "really pretty", but said there was not that much of it.

"There's a little bit of snow," he said.

"It's not like it was a few times last winter when it was just covered in snow and nobody could get up and down the hill. I think we'll be OK."

Paul Wilkins, on-call manager at Devon Highways control room, said there had been "no major impact to the network".

Mr Wilkins said: "We have 37 main gritting routes, which cover around 1,800 miles of our road network.

"We've got around 40 weather stations which are constantly feeding information back to us. We've got a bespoke weather forecast provider."

He said combined it "allows us to make well informed decisions, in the morning, throughout the course of the day to ensure we're treating the network and keeping it as safe as possible".

In its warning, the Met Office said accumulations of 2-5cm (0.8-1.9 inches) of snow was possible while some places might get up to 10cm (3.9 inches).

It warned of disruption to public transport services and a chance of injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces.
