Cornwall Council says it is set to progress major safety improvement work at an accident blackspot on the A30.

The council said there had been "several serious and fatal accidents" at the Plusha junction over the years, which prompted calls for a redesign of the junction.

National Highways, police and Cornwall Council issued an emergency order in November to shut the junction, cut the speed limit and restrict right-turn traffic movements.

The council said a decision to start preparing a business case was made after a full council meeting in January and £250,000 had been committed to the work.

'Improving road safety'

It said a motion, put forward by local councillor Adrian Parsons, called on Cornwall Council to take the lead in developing a full redesign of the junction.

It added the business case would show how the work would meet the necessary criteria to qualify for funding from the national roads programme.

Councillor Connor Donnithorne, portfolio holder for transport, said the decision to progress the business case underlined the council's "commitment to improving road safety".

"I would like to recognise the work put in by councillor Parsons and the Safe Plusha group to bring this issue to full council and look forward to the development of this significant safety scheme," he said.

'Significant safety scheme'

"We will also continue to support National Highways on delivering the interim safety measures currently being developed for this section of the A30."

Cornwall Council deputy leader and portfolio holder for resources, councillor David Harris, said he was "very pleased" funds could be found out of the transport budget.
