First island secondary school to trial traffic ban

La Vieille Rue will be closed to traffic during pick-up and drop-off time as part of a trial

The first secondary school in Guernsey is set to trial a scheme to ban traffic at pick-up and drop-off time on La Vieille Rue during the first half of the upcoming term.
St Sampson's High School will become the third school after St Martin's School and La Houguette Primary School made the school street scheme permanent in the last two years.
The States said the initiative promoted alternative transport for students like walking and cycling, and would result in a "safer, healthier, and more pleasant environment".
Principal Vicky Godley said she was "proud" to be the first secondary school to partake in the scheme.
She said: "We've identified La Vieille Rue as the road with the greatest potential to reduce traffic, improve safety and encourage more students and staff to walk or cycle to school.
"I'm looking forward to seeing the impact of this trial."
The scheme will begin on 4 September and finish on 24 October, closing La Vieille Rue on weekdays between 08:00 and 08:30 and 15:00 and 15:30 BST.
Cyclists, emergency vehicles and vehicles accessing properties will be allowed access.
