A 20-year-old prisoner arrested on suspicion of murder following the sudden death of another inmate has been released on police bail.
Northamptonshire Police was called to HMP Five Wells in Wellingborough on Tuesday morning after a 49-year-old man was found dead.
Detectives said further investigation was required after results of a post-mortem examination held on Wednesday were inconclusive.
Det Ch Insp Johnny Campbell described the death as a "tragic incident".
The deceased man had not been named by police but his next of kin were informed and were being supported by specialist officers, the force said.
HMP Five Wells is a category C prison run by security firm G4S.
It cost £253m to build. It opened in 2022 and houses about 1,700 inmates.
