Birmingham's big wheel and another fairground ride that were closed when a neighbouring attraction failed and injured 13 people will reopen in the coming days, the BBC understands.

Two people were taken to hospital when the City Star Flyer in Centenary Square started going backwards before carriages dropped towards the ground on 12 December.

The injured have described being hit by flying glass and suffering wounds to their face, legs and arms.

Two people, aged 55 and 21, have been bailed after they were arrested on suspicion of perverting the course of justice and obstructing officers, while the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is also investigating.

Three rides in total were closed following the incident - including the city's big wheel which is a popular Christmas tradition for many families.

While the City Star Flyer will remain shut as investigations continue, it is thought the other two rides will be able to welcome people again before Christmas.

In a statement, the HSE said it "appreciated the concern" around the incident and was working with the relevant authorities.

It added specialists had attended the site this week and an investigation would establish exactly what happened.

Birmingham City Council added it was aware the company behind the ride, Danter Attractions Ltd, was conducting an independent assessment on the two rides not involved in the incident last week.

"The investigation into the cause of the StarFlyer incident is ongoing led by the HSE, with all partners fully supporting," the statement read.

"If and when Danter Attractions Ltd choose to reopen, the Council will seek further assurances that all the required independent industry standard approvals are in place to ensure the highest safety standards."

A Danter Attractions Ltd spokesperson previously said the firm's thoughts were with the individuals and families affected by the crash.

"There is an ongoing investigation and we are fully co-operating with the authorities," they said.

"At this time we are unable to provide any additional comment."
