A man who died after crashing into a tree has been named as a Metropolitan Police officer.

PC Louie Day was killed on the A414, between Chelmsford and Ongar in Essex, in the early hours of Friday, 5 September.

The 23-year-old worked as a response officer in Barking and Dagenham, east London, and was described as a "popular" colleague.

"A beautiful soul has left this world and will be greatly missed by all who loved him," his family added in a tribute.

Essex Police said its officers were "working to give them the answers they need about what led up to his death".

PC Day joined the Met's East Area Command in January, having spent two years as a community support officer.

He was driving his Vauxhall Corsa when it left the road and struck a tree shortly before 03:30 BST.

It was believed no other vehicles were involved in the crash.

Detectives have appealed for any CCTV or dashcam footage that could help their investigation.

Ch Supt Stuart Bell, who leads the East Area Command, said: "Louie was popular amongst his colleagues, who are devastated to hear of his passing.

"We continue to support Essex Police with their investigation and thank them for the support they are providing to Louie's family at this difficult time."
